Because schools and libraries are no place for people to be checking email, sending email, surfing eBay or porn, or stalking people on MySpace! These places are providing a service and should not have to be vulnerable to viruses and hackers!

WELL IF SOME KIDS WOULDNT GO ON SITES THEY AINT POSSED TO, THEN MAYBE THERE WOULD BE NO WEB FILTERS, I HATE THEM!!!!
I think there should be to an extent - like to block out porn and hate sites but when some school go so far in banning almost everything but the website for sesame street - its a little extreme, although I can understand them not wanting students to be diverted from doing their school work on the computers - they should still be available when kids are on spares and stuff like that
So you can't surf for porn. Even it that IS eduational to some degree. Buncha self-righteous censors if you ask me.
While we dont want the kiddies to visit porn sites I dont think there should be restrictions, Restrictions= Censorship.

It is very important that we do verything in our power to avoid censorship.
I don't support this but:

Web filters are used to keep innapropriate content from popping up on Government Funded screens (either by accident or on purpose) The case is stronger regarding schools due to the fact that the one and only function of those computers is for learning. Library computers are supposed to be open to the public for whatever purpose. (So content blockers should only go up when someone's waiting in line)
Well it prevents them from going on pornographic sights; the government can not do anything to harm children, thats why there are filters.
