Do you need a Ethernet switch or hub when using only two computers for a LAN game?

I want to hook up only two computers to play a LAN game. Do I need to buy an Ethernet switch or hub, or can I just connect the two computers with one CAT5 cable?

A hub, or a switch, or a crossover cable (not a standard patch cable) will do if you are playing only a LAN game. If you were to include users on the internet as well, you would likely need a router with a switch. If you are only using 2 computers, your most viable solution is to buy a crossover cable as it is the cheapest. Connect both computers, and then in your network properties, select a static IP address. Give 1 computer 192.168.1.11 and the other 192.168.1.12. This will ensure they both can communicate with each other.

If you dont want to use a hub, you can connect the two computer with a cross network cable.
You need a home network installed. It will allow the 2 system to talk back and forth. Installing that is a whole different question. If you do use a switch as each gets exactly what it needs, with a hub the bandwidth is shared with all the ports.
Depends on your internet speed is it worth it to try? You can get a router or a hub but you cant use one cable to hook up both of them.
