With two windows computers running Windows XP (PRO), can I set up a domain to link them?

I know I can just set up a workgroup, but I was just wondering if its possible to use a domain

not a true domain anyways.. you can set polices and such where one workstation could reference settings stored on the other.. which would just be a small workgroup, mimicking a domain

a true domain of course, would require a server operating system, where you could set securities, logins, profiles, all that active directory fun stuff... and even then a server O/S and an XP workstation... would be slightly an overkill.

if you want to just control access on one workstation, or even both.. Microsoft has a free addon for XP called Steady State.. it's quite nice, though it seems to be a resource hog on the HDD recovery methods... but you can ignore that, and use only the security settings... maybe it's closer, and less cost than what you are trying to do with a server.

You can run a domain with one single computer, if you really felt like it.

If you are running server 2000 or server 2003, you can setup active directory and have that server in it's own domain without anything else also in the domain.

Not sure the purpose of doing that but yes it is possible. You could join one workstation to the domain and there you'd have 2 computers (a server and a workstation) on the domain.

ask the first a math problem like 2+2 and then ask the other computer which door to go through it the computer you asked the math problem gets it wrong, then the other one is telling the truth about the doors, or vice versa.

Help i am a retard when it comes to computers?

i need to purchase a wireless router for my home. i dont exactly know how well performance varies from router to router. What the heck do i do? I own a sony vaio desktop vgc-rb43 with cable internet connection. What would you suggest. I would like to have a decent speed. 10mbps wont cut it. Need at least the 54 or whatever typically comes with a router. I guess i am more worried about the compatibility with my computers. My laptop is a hp. can you help?

Forget what the others said. You know that doofus works at Best Buy/Circuit City, they get payed to stand around and scratch their ***.

Linksys, they're piles of crap. The TRENDnets are plug and play, very easy to get working and they don't break down.

Also, sure your web connection may be only 10mbps, but if you transfer large files (1gb+) from laptop to desktop and vice versa, you want as much speed as possible. I feel my 100mbps wired is too slow, I should've gone with 1000mbps.

Problems can happen on just about any type of pc from any manufacturer. Using a Gateway right now and the only problem with it (laptop) is that occasionally the backlight flickers on and off. But it is old and out of warranty unfortunately. Other than that it works just fine. Gateways are good. Good tech support.
Gateway went out of production in australia about 10 years ago. They then resurfaced under a different brand name. The biggest problem we had with them at work was the hard drives kept failing. Whats your PC doing that you need help with ?

No, I have had 2 Gateways- including my laptop that I am currently using. I love my Gateway- and their tech support is the best I have ever encountered. Now Dell, on the other hand is terrible. They outsource their tech support and you get some person who can't understand you and you can't understand them. I will never buy a Dell again, but would buy another Gateway tomorrow!

Plenty of organizations accepting used computers with email contacts. You will have to make those contacts.

OPTION 1

I have not used this DSL but the fact that it has 4 LAN ports indicates you can connect your PCs directly to it. If so, then, you would need to uplink the DSL to a 10/100 switch or an ethernet Hub (4-port may suffice). Use LAN cable to connect the DSL to the 4-port swich (the DSL manual may indicate crossed or straight cable. if it does not specify then try either).

The above will give you 6 free LAN ports (3 free ports on the DSL and 3 free ports on the switch) to connect your 5 computers.

OPTION 2

If your DSL does not do IP routing (that allows your 5 computers to access Internet) then it would be most ideal that you purchase a SOHO router that has 8 LAN ports on it. If so, then: use UTP cable (as in option 1) to connect the DSL to the 8-port Router. You would have 7 LAN ports free to use with your 5 computers.

You do need a hub, a switch or maybe a router. I am not sure if the ''AT%26TGatewayDSL'' can assign IP to your computers or not. I will say an 8-port router would probably be a better idea. Once you have the router in place, all you need to do is connect Ethernet cables. They should just work like that with minimum configurations required.
Well...the best option would be to get ur own router with ur specification and connect it to the AT%26TGatewayDSL. Also make sure that u configure the AT%26TGatewayDSL to the bridge mode.
