What is the best and most reliable brand of notebook computers?

I've had bad experience with HP, toshiba, and gateway in the past so I'm pretty wary of getting another one of those. Or have those brand name computers improved?

toshiba makes good stuff ... it really is a matter of how a laptop is configured as to how good it is ... also its the user that has alot to do with how the operating system stands up ...

I have an Acer Ferrari 4500 Series. Sweet laptop running Win X64 Flawless so far.
go for a dell, they are pretty robust pieces if pc!
In my experience in computer repair I would have to number them as follows:

1: Toshiba

2: Acer

3: Sony

4: That's it, that's all I trust. The rest are crap.

In the end, you get what you pay for. The more expensive the laptop, the better quality. Just don't go overboard with paying too much though. Keep it under $1200 with these three companies and you'll have a very nice laptop.
It all depends on what you want to use the notebook for, and your price limit. If you're looking for a notebook for office use, or for work, you might want to consider a mac. I had to use one during one of my classes though, and let me tell you, it wasn't a walk in the park. If you've already had experience with a mac than it should be fine. If you want one just to use at home for...whatever you do at home, then a dell should be great. The dell Inspiron (spelling?!) was the one i used for quite a long time and it worked great and was pretty reliable. Dell's are generally reliable. If you're a serious gamer (with deep pockets), alienware offers great notebooks with awesome graphics. If your pockets aren't that big, then a Dell XPS is good too. I don't recommend HP or gateway but Toshiba might have improved. It all depends on what you would use the laptop for so shop around and see what you like. Good luck!
well really today's laptops are all quite good, toshiba is a world leading brand in notebook technology, but the quality has gone down a bit. some good laptops that don't really get noticed are isus, ibm, acer, dell. I've had a acer computer for quite a while now and its really done me justice, the only problem with acers is that the battery is never too good.
Try a Mac, seriously!
