I have 2 computers both running windows xp connected to a router which is connected to a DSL modem. Can I share a printer one one computer with the other. Please provide simple directions as I am not a networking guru.

If the printer is connected physically to computer 1, then on computer 1, open Control Panel/ Printers %26 Faxes. View installed printers. Locate the printer, right click on it, and choose Sharing. Move the dot to ''Share this printer'', click Apply and then OK.

Now, right click on My Computer, and go to Properties, then the Computer Name. Write down what workgroup this computer is in.

Now go to Computer 2. Right click on My Computer, go to Properties, then Computer Name. If the workgroup is different on this one, click the Change... buttom and type in the workgroup that Computer 1 is in. If you had to change it, you will need to restart Windows for the new workgroup to 'kick in'. If it was already the same, just close out w/o changing anything.

On Comp 2, open Control Panel, Printers%26Faxes, and click on Install New Printer. Follow the prompts to install the ''Network Printer'', and XP will do the rest.

I have a desktop and a laptop. The desktop runs XP and the laptop Vista. I am using Outlook 2003 on both computers. At first I was having trouble getting the calendar to sync onto the laptop at all, but I changed the settings and it synced. However, I added a bunch of dates using my desktop, synced to my phone (which worked just fine) and then tried to sync to my laptop from the phone. No go. I did a test and it will take info from the laptop to the phone, but not from the phone to the laptop. Help?

I'll expand a little on the first answer. As he said, there are 3rd party companies involved in producing the components for computer makers. Lets use my Hewlett-Packard as an example. It has a motherboard that is made by MSI, a company that manufactures motherboards, graphics cards, and other PC components. Most likely, HP put their desired specs on paper - like how many PCI slots, what processor socket type, number of RAM slots and how much RAM to support, etc. This way HP can ensure that the motherboard they'll be buying is consistent for the models it will be used in, and that it only has the features they've asked for...no extras that would increase the price.

You can boot your computer by hard disk drive, LAN (if your admin provides net-boot), cdrom (dvd), floppy, usb drive etc. If you do not have the option to boot from HDD and LAN (i assumed because you are asking this question), the best way to boot your system is using a bootable CD(or DVD) that gives you network config support for Internet. Install a Proxy server like Winproxy on the computer that shares the internet instead of ICS. You can control and see what they access.

VNC will do what you are looking for. It is simple to setup on Win32 and comes in just about every other OS flavor under the sun. It can be tuned to work well even at dialup speeds. There are a few variants out so you do have quite a selection. Below is one that I have used and can verify that it works well.

Hmmm... this is an interesting question that has been asked for many years by many great minds. But, the question in this form is just unanswerable--but it is unaswerable in any form right now.

First we must define what intelligence is. We can simply say that intelligence is the computational ability of humans. This may not be the best definition, but it is essential asking, ''will computers ever be as smart as humans?''

Even defining intelligence by referencing human brain power doesn't help us very much, because there is so little known about the brain. When you solve a math problem we have no idea what your brain did to get to the solution, thus AI is as much a problem cognitive and nuero science right now as it is for computer science. Assuming we could figure out exactly how the brain thinks, then it is reasonable to believe that we could build a machine to follow this thought process (but this would probably calculate very differently from the computers we have today).

This last approach focused on changing the hardware of computers in order to acheive AI. This is only one approach. Another would be to look at the software and attempt to control the hardware we currently have available. There has been much progress in this area. Look at the video games of today. It is pretty amazing how good the AI of some games is today. Your digital enemy reacts to your each and every move, some games (some of the new football games) even ''learn'' your style of play and will play differently against you than they will other people. These feats are pretty impressive, but they boil down to little more than storing what you have done in the past and looking up some reaction that they are suppose to make to your action. Really on the basic level it is just manipulating bytes of data or shifting or adding 1's and 0's.

Well the easiest way might be to get a wireless router, you will need a router anyway and get wireless cards for your computers. That way you will not need any cables and you will be free to move computers around in your home if you want to later without rewiring.
Look into wireless, it's not that costly and just as fast as wired internet, plus no more cables to worry about.

yes, but b/c the driver model is written for specific hardware, if you notice, Apples tend to be more stable, and take up less of a memory foot print then the competing Microsoft OS.

you can use a router that gives a wi fi connection but i recoumend switching to verizon dsl because it is 13 times faster than dial up and you can use the phone at the same time and it is onely 18 bucks a month believe me people in my family have all switched to dsl after we got it and they used it

There's no reason you couldn't back up your data on the stable computer over the network.

Given your apparent talent for bringing down so many machines at once, it may be wise to get a NAS device. Then, you can create disk images of your computers for backup every week or so. That way, you could clone it back to the way it was a week ago rather than starting from scratch.

Remove the firewall on both PCs (turn it off in security center) and also run the network setup wizard on both and make sure you have the PCs in the same workgroup.

It's really simple, you should just connect all the computers to the router (any form, wireless or wired) and enable the file sharing on all your PC's.

Here is the way to activate it.

Make a right click on the folder you want to share%26gt; Click Properties%26gt; Press the sharing tab%26gt; Click Share This Folder On My Network%26gt; Put a name for it%26gt; Click Apply%26gt; Click Ok.

And if that doesn't work restart your network and run the soft-ware that came with your router.

If you are lucky your LCD had 2 video inputs that you can switch between using buttons on the display.

If not, go for a KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse switch) and share all 3 desktop bits. You can get KVMs that handle sound or USB as well... for more money.

Download the major browsers and test your site with all of them before releasing it to the world. You'll probably find there is a difference in the way coding is translated by different browsers.

Keep your code simple, cut bits at a time to a spare document (so you can paste them back) and recheck your document until you find what is causing the difference.

I can also guess you have set IIS up on your own machine to test your pages but your are uploading to a Apache based site. As Apache is far more common out there in website land , may I suggest installing Apache, PHP and MySQL to your computer to test?

I like to stick to the standards. Depending on what your people are doing, it depends on what they need to download. I mean, if the average file they download is 5MB, then you have to keep in mind they need that file quick so they can continue their work.

If people are simply downloading and transferring 1MB files every half hour, then you might want a cable modem. I think a cable modem does pretty good. I mean, the Pentagon didn't have much of a system in the first place, and they did fine with an Intranet.

Not sure where you are located, but if you look on craigslist or freecycle there are places where people post items they are willing to give away for free. The best strategy is if YOU post an add, say once per week, on their site saying ''I will pick up your old computer.'' Make it really easy for someone who maybe wasn't even thinking about getting rid of one to realize that they do have one they would want to get off their hands with zero effort.

If you are looking for many computers, I would check universities. See if they have any computer labs that are being upgraded and what they typically do with their old machines. This may not happen until summer, however.

I would expect that companies have policies about proper disposal that requires wiping the data from old computers (I know mine does) and it would be harder to get anything from them.

This can be done if you use what is called a Crossover cable. What you're calling a LAN line has a technical term of ''Cat5''. That is short for Category 5 Cable. Cat5 cable has 4 pairs of wires (That makes 8 wires). Cat5 cable is not only used for computers and was designed with the idea of expanding and multipurpose. Computers and LAN equipment (Ethernet) use wires 1, 2, 3, and 6. The rest of the wires are unused. Wires 1 and 2 are for transmitting data and wires 3 and 6 are for receiving data.

When you connect two computers with a regular Cat5 cable (Which is what most stores sell), you are connecting the transmit on one computer to the transmit on another computer. A Cat5 Crossover cable takes the transmits on one of the cable and reverses them on the other end of the cable so that the transmits are now receives and the receives are now transmits. This allows two-way communication.

After you have the two way communication set up you can do basic communication. Netbios is a good example or if you know enough of IP you can set the two up to communicate by setting the IP of one to 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.2 and the IP of the other one to 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway to 192.168.1.1. It all depends on what you're trying to do from there. Most games will be able to communicate from there if you're trying to play that type of game.

How is the network sharing being performed? If you are using one computer as a gateway to the other, you may not be able to avoid the problem. You should also probably double check your speed advise, your DSL can not actually run at half as slow as dial up, why would you bother?

not a true domain anyways.. you can set polices and such where one workstation could reference settings stored on the other.. which would just be a small workgroup, mimicking a domain

a true domain of course, would require a server operating system, where you could set securities, logins, profiles, all that active directory fun stuff... and even then a server O/S and an XP workstation... would be slightly an overkill.

if you want to just control access on one workstation, or even both.. Microsoft has a free addon for XP called Steady State.. it's quite nice, though it seems to be a resource hog on the HDD recovery methods... but you can ignore that, and use only the security settings... maybe it's closer, and less cost than what you are trying to do with a server.

Linksys, they're piles of crap. The TRENDnets are plug and play, very easy to get working and they don't break down.

Also, sure your web connection may be only 10mbps, but if you transfer large files (1gb+) from laptop to desktop and vice versa, you want as much speed as possible. I feel my 100mbps wired is too slow, I should've gone with 1000mbps.

Problems can happen on just about any type of pc from any manufacturer. Using a Gateway right now and the only problem with it (laptop) is that occasionally the backlight flickers on and off. But it is old and out of warranty unfortunately. Other than that it works just fine. Gateways are good. Good tech support.
Gateway went out of production in australia about 10 years ago. They then resurfaced under a different brand name. The biggest problem we had with them at work was the hard drives kept failing. Whats your PC doing that you need help with ?

No, I have had 2 Gateways- including my laptop that I am currently using. I love my Gateway- and their tech support is the best I have ever encountered. Now Dell, on the other hand is terrible. They outsource their tech support and you get some person who can't understand you and you can't understand them. I will never buy a Dell again, but would buy another Gateway tomorrow!

OPTION 1

I have not used this DSL but the fact that it has 4 LAN ports indicates you can connect your PCs directly to it. If so, then, you would need to uplink the DSL to a 10/100 switch or an ethernet Hub (4-port may suffice). Use LAN cable to connect the DSL to the 4-port swich (the DSL manual may indicate crossed or straight cable. if it does not specify then try either).

The above will give you 6 free LAN ports (3 free ports on the DSL and 3 free ports on the switch) to connect your 5 computers.

OPTION 2

If your DSL does not do IP routing (that allows your 5 computers to access Internet) then it would be most ideal that you purchase a SOHO router that has 8 LAN ports on it. If so, then: use UTP cable (as in option 1) to connect the DSL to the 8-port Router. You would have 7 LAN ports free to use with your 5 computers.

You do need a hub, a switch or maybe a router. I am not sure if the ''AT%26TGatewayDSL'' can assign IP to your computers or not. I will say an 8-port router would probably be a better idea. Once you have the router in place, all you need to do is connect Ethernet cables. They should just work like that with minimum configurations required.
Well...the best option would be to get ur own router with ur specification and connect it to the AT%26TGatewayDSL. Also make sure that u configure the AT%26TGatewayDSL to the bridge mode.

My internet speed is the same as the speed I get between computers in house. How is that possible?

This is more of a followup of my last question. I did a speed test using dslreports.com using my desktop connected via a linksys usb wireless G and with cat5. I also did this test with one of my laptops. The speeds were all faster than the stated speeds for my plan. The wireless was actually rated faster than the wired. I am getting around 6Mbps which is what I get during downloads. The problem is that when transferring between computers on my lan speed is the same speed most of the time. I have done wifi laptop to wifi desktop, cat5 laptop to cat5 desktop, and any other combination. They all transferred at the same rate except for when I connected my laptop via cat5 and my desktop via wireless which was twice as fast.

I am thinking that my wireless router isn't routing very quickly no matter how the computers are connected. My router is a Linksys WRT54G with DDWRT for firmware. Are other routers better at Lan throughput?

is that a liscensed version? if it is, no, you can't install in on two computers because it will be asking for the product key and microsoft is tight on that one. but you can install it on one computer, and you just have to crack it on the other computer.

By the way, vista is very unstable still. I had vista ultimate and most of my programs didn't work because it was incompatible with vista. i had to upgrade most programs (either bought it or downloaded it). Lucky if the software is available but there are still a lot of softwares that are not upgraded for use with vista. Just a bit of opinion. :)
